Abstract: The information related to the area and depth of occurrence of soft soils, their type (characteristics) and correctly defined strain and strength parameters is essential for safe and in the same time economic design of a road linear investment. The paper presents evaluation of derived values of geotechnical parameters of soft organic soils as well as the correlations of their index and mechanical properties. Organic soils, i.e. peats, gyttja and muds, were encountered in the subsoil of the planned S5 express road from the location of Białe Błota to the border of Wielkopolska and Kujawsko-Pomorskie voivodeships. The evaluation of derived values of geotechnical soil parameters was based on the results of field tests (boreholes, CPTU tests, vane tests, DMT tests) and laboratory tests (triaxial tests, oedometer tests). With reference to the tested organic soils it was concluded that organic matter content is of essential impact on index properties like: natural water content, bulk density, and on strain–strength parameters. It may be applied (in addition to the type of soil) as a specific feature that indicates the presence of organic soil.
