Abstract: The aim of the paper is to assess the appearance of hot days in Bydgoszcz during the period 2005–2008 and to recognize the relations between their occurrence and different kinds of air masses. Data from automatic meteorological station, located at Institute of Geography by Kazimierz Wielki University, were used. Based on every hour average values of temperature, relative humidity, global solar radiation and wind speed, the biothermical indices were calculated: Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI, °C) and Index of Sultriness (W_Sult). The air masses were determined on the basis of the lower synoptic maps, published by Institute of Meteorology and Water Management. The air masses were divided into: arcitc air (PA), polar maritime fresh (PPm), polar maritime warm (PPmc), polar maritime old (PPms), polar continental (PPk) and tropical (PZ). July is a month with the highest values of Universal Thermal Climate Index, and September and August characterize the lowest values of UTCI. Only in July, during noon hours strong heat stress is noted and the moderate heat stress occurs with the highest frequency. In this month moderate sultriness appears during 20% cases and the strong sultriness occurs during 5% cases. The lowest sultriness is noted in May and August. The hottest days appear during inflow of tropical and polar continental air masses. Days with tropical air characterize the worst biothermal conditions. The best biothermal conditions, with small sultriness, occur during advection of polar maritime old and polar maritime warm air masses.
