Abstract: The paper discusses the state of air quality in Cracow based on the results of measurements carried out at air quality monitoring stations: Krasiński’s Avenue, Cracow Nowa Huta, Cracow Krowodrza, and Kurdwanów. The frequency of exceeding air quality standards (PM10) and alarm levels (for NO2, SO2, PM10) was calculated. The study also examined the relationship between meteorological elements and the concentration of air pollutants. Studies have shown that the main problem in case of air quality in Cracow is a frequent exceeding of acceptable levels for particulate matter PM10. Results of multiple regression analysis showed that meteorological elements influence the formation of air pollution concentrations. Significant diversification of the relationship between analyzed pollutants and meteorological factors was noted. This indicates high complexity of such relationships, some of which are affected by many factors simultaneously. In Cracow in 2006–2012 study period 81 episodes of air pollutants PM10 exceedance were reported. The longest episodes were observed for 23 and 19 days. The presence of exceeded concentrations of pollution episodes is often accompanied by the following factors: the lack of vertical air mixing, low temperature, deposition of dense frozen air, the occurrence of fog and thermal inversion.
