Title: Variability of ice phenomena on the Vistula River in the vicinity of Bydgoszcz

Authors: GORĄCZKO, M.

Keywords: ice phenomena, the Lower Vistula River, Bydgoszcz Water Junction

Abstract: The article describes an analysis of observations of ice phenomena progress of Lower Vistula River, conducted between 1946 and 2012, on representative gauge section this segment of the river – Bydgoszcz-Fordon. It has been concluded, that starting from late 1960s ice coverage of Lower Vistula is much lighter then it used to be in the past and very rarely ice covers the river completely. Also the length of the period itself, during which ice phenomena occurs, has decreased noticeably. Those factors contribute to a significant lowering of the risk of floods caused by ice blockage on Vistula below dam in Włocławek, which exactly has been the origin of the greatest floods on this river in recorded history, when the water level was reaching its peaks.
