Abstract: With the tightening of catchment areas the amount of drained water increases. To counteract these changes, it is essential to take actions aiming at increasing water retention. Technical resolutions which serve this purpose include among others rain gardens and green roofs. The article presents the characteristics of the chosen systems of bioretention as well as the results of preliminary research concerning the capability of satisfying the water needs of plants and the water – surface relations in growing media used in green roofs.
