Abstract: This paper makes an attempt to assess the impact of swelling to deformation parameters. Research was conducted at the Geotechnical Laboratory in the Department of Geotechnical Engineering; Warsaw University of Life Sciences. Samples for laboratory analyses were taken from the Marymont metro station in Warsaw, Poland. The samples were then examined based on basic physical properties of the soil, the swelling pressure and the soil compressibility. Based on the results made, the calculations of the swelling index and the compressibility modulus, we conclude that the analysis demonstrates that the initial load applied to the soil has a big impact on swelling. The swelling index increases with a decrease of the initial load, and the samples with less moisture and loaded with the same pressure have a higher swelling index. Compressibility modulus is increasing with decreasing of swelling and rebound indexes.
